Kanchanaburi (Thai: กาญจนบุรี) is a small town (Mueang Thesaban) west of Thailand and the capital of the province of Kanchanaburi. In 2006, it had a population of 31,327. The city covers the entire Nuea Tambon Ban and Ban Tai and parts of Pak Phraek and Tha Makham, all of Mueang Kanchanaburi district, and parts of Tambon Tha Lo of Tha Muang district. Kanchanaburi on the north bank of the river, and is a meeting place for travelers, its location on the edge of a mountainArea to keep it much cooler than the other provinces in central Thailand. The city has two large industrial zones: the center consists of a grid of several streets with office buildings, shop windows, and a shopping mall and the area along the river are usually some companies' further west along the River Kwai Road. Once a year is the carnival in town and is built in the area near the bridge. At night there is a small pyrotechnics display that reinterprets the Allied bombing ofBridge.
